We mourn the loss of Henry Vega Esquivel. Henry was born on August 29, 1947 to Maria and
Juan Esquivel and passed away on July 24, 2020 in San Antonio, Texas. Through our deep
sadness, we ask that you celebrate our Dad, Henry. We celebrate the end of his service to his
beloved country and family.Henry was raised on the West Side of San Antonio, growing up around life-long friends, while
working at an early age to support his family. At the age of 17, Henry decided, with his mother
Maria Cisneros' approval, to join the U.S. Marine Corp. After proudly serving his country during
the Vietnam War, Henry returned to San Antonio and married Hilda Hernandez Esquivel, and settled down in the South Side of San Antonio
Henry and Hilda were married for 50 years and raised a family of 4: Barbara, Maggie, Virginia,
and Henry Jr. Henry worked many jobs and spent much of his life doing paint and body work on
all kinds of vehicles. Our Dad made a difference in this world. He was everything that he could be to all of us: a son,
brother, husband, father, compadre, grandfather, father-in-law, and Marine. His kindness to
others was seen in so many ways. He figured out ways to give us everything that we needed
and wanted. He gave us all a life well-lived full of love and support. Our Dad loved feeding people. His BBQ was legendary. He put others first, always making sure that everyone ate before he did and would willing go without if he felt there wasn't enough.
Our Dad always made time for people who needed help. Over the years he opened his home to those in need and who he knew needed help in the neighborhood. He never asked for these favors to be returned. He was proud to help and did so with humility. Our Dad encouraged
equality, embraced diversity, and allowed and supported us to love who we wanted to love and be who we wanted to be without restrictions. He taught us to be good voting citizens. Our Dad was an animal lover. His tough Marine mentality was often set aside to love his cats, dogs,
birds, and fish. He could easily be swayed to take in new animals. Our Dad was a lot of things to a lot of people but his greatest joy later in his life was being a grandfather. He fiercely guarded his grandkids and gave his heart to them, something that they
will keep with them throughout their lives. Henry is survived by his wife Hilda Esquivel, daughters Barbara Esquivel (spouse Leticia
Contreras), Magdalena Dao (spouse Thai Dao), Virginia Vasquez (spouse Richard Vasquez), son Henry Esquivel Jr. (spouse Melody Esquivel), granddaughter Kyra Danielle Garcia, grandson Brendon Nikolas Esquivel, and soon to join our family, grandson Vincent Esquivel. Henry also leaves behind his beloved brother, George Cisneros; along with brother Juan Esquivel, sister Gloria Vela, and countless cousins, nieces, and nephews. Our Dad now begins his watch over us as our eternal guardian. Semper Fi, Dad. Henry's memorial will be held at the San Antonio Mortuary with a walk threw viewing from 3:30PM. to 4:30PM. A mass will be held in his honor at St. Leo's Catholic Church on August 6 th at 9:30 AM, and the burial at 11:15 AM directly following the mass.
